16 July – 29 August 2011
An exhibition of new paintings, ceramics, glass and jewellery with a focus on colour.
Paintings by Sue Campion, Terence Clarke, Jon Brenton, James Wheeler and Liz Churton with more artists exhibiting work later in the summer.
We are working with the interior designer Chris Read of Read Interiors who will be in the gallery to give advice on working with colour in your home. Chris can give you advice on choosing artwork which fits your existing scheme or suggest ways in which you can create a whole new scheme using artwork as the keystone.. Another arm of Chris’ business is with Derbyshire Designs, who are a bespoke furniture manufacturer. Chris has had one of their armchairs upholstered in a fabric which is a response to several of the paintings we have in the gallery to show how textures and colours work with art in the home.
This is what Derbyshire Designs say about themselves:
“At Derbyshire Design we offer you a first class upholstery service. Our skilled craftsmen take enormous pride in creating sofas and chairs that they know you’ll enjoy using for many years. Everything is handmade from start to finish and delivered to you by us. This is the standard you should expect from the most expensive upholsterers, but being canny Northerners, we’ve managed to bring home the bacon at a great price.
Derbyshire Design is a joint adventure between Ann Dyke, the manager and designer at Allen Upholstery; a long established and well regarded Sheffield Company and Chris Read, the Dulux Design Service interior designer based in Derbyshire. We have together been designing bespoke upholstery together for Chris’s clients for about 8 years. It only recently dawned on us that we’ve been making sofas and chairs that others might like too, which has resulted in the birth of Derbyshire Design.
We think you should be able to expect a lot from a proper piece of upholstery, including a hardwood frame (we use birch, from properly managed European woodlands). It should be entirely hand made (we have 22 of them at work on your behalf, none of our processes are automated.). It should use only top quality materials (comfort and durability head the list when we decide what goes into each piece). Seats should be fully sprung, no webbing used at all. It should have style – it should look good and have great proportions.”
As well as her own broad experience of interior design, Chris is also a consultant for the Dulux Design Service, which offers a huge scope of colours and combinations. The usual price for a Dulux Design Service consultation is £295 and we are offering £100 off to our customers during the COLOUR exhibition. You can read Chris’ profile here
